Inside Becoming

DISCLAIMER: This is not a book review.
What better book to kick off 2019 than that by former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, titled Becoming (it’s even on Barack’s favorite books of 2018…haha!)
When I read memoirs, I like to take notes from passages in the books that stand out. The purpose of this blog post is not to provide a summary of the book in any sense, but rather, bring forth certain quotes that could be meaningful for you in one way or another.
Have a read through the following excerpts from her book:-
- There will always be naysayers. The doubt doesn’t go away, but the most successful people I know have figured out how to live with it, to lean on the people who believe in them, and push onward with their goals.
- Barack: What’s better for us? Do we settle for the world as it is, or do we work for the world as it should be?
- He (Barack) was a good person who wanted to have an impact in the world, and despite my skepticism he decided this (politics) was the best way to go about it.
- I didn’t like the question of race. It was an idea, that sold us all short, assuming that the differences were all that anyone saw.
- If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, it’s the power of using your voice.
- Confidence calls from within.
- If you don’t get out there and define yourself, you’ll be quickly and inaccurately defined by others.
- You’ve got to be twice as good to go half as far. (referring to minority groups)
- Life was better, always, when we could measure the warmth.
- Regardless of what I choose to do, I knew I was bound to disappoint someone.
- Relax and try pace yourself.
- You belong. You matter. I think highly of you.
- I had nothing or I had everything. It depends on which way you want to tell it.
- This was our bid of permanence: a rising generation that understood what was possible – and that even more was possible for them.
- There’s grace in being willing to know and hear others. This, for me, is how we become.
