Radio & Wheelchair Rugby
One of the beautiful perks of being in the radio industry is that you get to meet inspiring individuals from completely different walks of life, with an array of ideas and purposes in life to fulfill.
I was honoured to have interviewed two representatives from the Eagles Wheelchair Rugby Team. We have started a campaign to interview sports personnel’s at the end of every week; and what better story to tell than to be the coach of a wheelchair rugby team?
We often take the simple tasks in life for granted – like getting out of bed – but for some, it isn’t all that simple. During the interview we spoke all things wheelchair rugby and sports transformation. By the end of it, we felt like we had to reflect on our own lives. How inclusive is our demeanor? We often think that we (I) can’t make a difference in someone else’s life -but in fact, that’s exactly where it starts…with us.
A few of us from the radio station were invited to participate in a wheelchair rugby tournament at the University of Cape Town (UCT), so without second thoughts we entered a team. On the day, 10 different clubs and societies were represented. From rugby to rowing and from jiu-jitsu to gymnastics. Each society received a veteran from the wheelchair rugby team and they acted as ‘coach’. Let me tell you, wheelchair rugby is highly addictive: 8 minutes per half, 4 players per team and just a whole lot of fun. I don’t want to get too much into the finer details of the game. Four games and a couple of blisters later, our arms were exhausted. The intent behind the tournament was to raise awareness of sports transformation – and that was accomplished successfully.
But I would like to leave you with one statement for thought:-
When was the last time you did something out of the ordinary, out of selflessness and for the benefit of someone else?
